Our school encouraged us to be a volunteer in our local community

My friends and I decided to join a program to help the elderly

Every weekend, we visit a nursing home near the city center

We help clean their rooms and repair some broken things, like a lamp or a chair

I learned how to use a hammer and other simple tools.

We also spend time talking with the old people, which makes them feel less lonely

One old lady, a retired actress, told us many stories about the theatre.

She showed us her old photo album filled with precious memories

Another old man, a former soldier, shared his brave stories from the war

Listening to them is like reading a living history book
